Help · Protection and privacy
Are my messages encrypted?
Yes, if both of you have the current version and have keys. Then the text and the files are encrypted on the phone, before they leave.
When this is so
- Both of you must have the current version.
- Both of you must have keys.
- This is called end-to-end encryption.
- The server keeps an unreadable envelope.
- The server is the computer that carries the messages.
- If the version is old, there can be an older mode.
- If there are no keys, it can still be the old mode.
- In a group the same applies to the people with the version and keys.
Step by step
- Open the private chat.
- Tap the ⋮ menu at the top.
- Choose „Fingerprint for checking“.
- Compare the numbers with the other person in person.
Good to know
- We do not say that the protection is enough for every case.
- Traces stay that there is a conversation.
- It also stays between whom it is, and when.
- We do not say that there are no such traces.
- A message to an old key cannot be read.
- Ask for a new one, after the new fingerprint.
- The fingerprint is numbers for checking with the other person.
- Check them in person, or on a call.
